GEORG FRIEDRICH HANDEL

The theme composer for Helsinki Early Music 2008 is George Frideric Handel (1685-1759), in honour of the Handel jubilee to be celebrated next year. The programme for the week will include music from his Italian and English periods and by some of his contemporaries: Hellendaal, Geminiani, Pepusch, Rebel and others. Among the guest artists for this week are German mezzo-soprano Susanne Lagner and the Sheridan Ensemble, harpsichordist Mitzi Meyerson and violinist Kreeta-Maria Kentala.

As a young man Handel spent three years in the cultural centres of Rome, Venice, Florence and Naples, absorbing the Italian style and opera. He took Italian opera with him to London, the city where he lived for most of his life.

The tour de force of Helsinki Early Music 2008 is Handel’s opera Acis and Galatea, in a joint production by the Helsinki Baroque Orchestra, the Finnish Chamber Opera and the University of Helsinki. The stage director is Aapo Häkkinen and the soloists are Anna-Kristiina Kaapola and Kajsa Dahlbäck (soprano), Tuomas Katajala (tenor) and Robert McLoud (bass).

A ROYAL WEDDING IN RENAISSANCE
HUNGARY 1476

As an extra Helsinki Early Music is staging a rare Renaissance production in collaboration with the Hungarian Cultural Centre. Most of the music performed at the wedding of the Hungarian King Matias and his Beatrice was by famous Western Europeans like Ockeghem and Tinctoris, but some was by such lesser-known composers as Hayne van Ghizeghem. The wedding music will be performed by the Corvina Consort from Hungary.
